The Scopes Trial
“A great memory from this time was when I went to meet and visit with John Scopes at his office at United Gas in Shreveport. We spoke about “The Scopes” trial. There had been a rumor that he was in town. I found out he was actually working there so called him up.
At that time, he had never been interviewed. Many in the community were not impressed with Mr. Scopes and the trial; they did not approve of evolution being taught in schools. I called and said, “This is Barry Bailey at First Methodist, may I come and see you sometime and hear you talk?”
He said, “Can you come now?”
United Gas was right downtown by the church. We had a private conversation and I just sat, and he told me his story.”
